Yoga and naturopathy for eyes diseases

There can be various vision related problems in eyes. The most common vision problems are refractive errors. Refractive Errors diseases are as follows:

1.          Nearsightedness (myopia also known as near-sightedness or short-sightedness)

2.         Farsightedness (hyperopia also known as farsightedness)

3.         Astigmatism (eye does not focus light evenly on the retina this result in distorted or blurred vision at all distances)

4.         Presbyopia (lens tightening disease due to aging).

Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. Cataracts (clouded lenses); optic nerve disorders (including glaucoma); Retinal disorders (problem with the nerve layer at the back of the eye); Macular degeneration (a disease that destroys sharp, central vision); Conjunctivitis (an infection also known as pinkeye) and Diabetic eye problems also are common eyes problems. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes. It causes blurred or dark spots in the field of vision and will eventually lead to blindness.

Other symptoms of eyes problem includes: Severe, sudden eye pain; recurrent pain in or around the eye; hazy, blurred, or double vision; seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots; seeing rainbows or halos around lights; seeing floating “spider webs”; seeing a “curtain coming down” over one eye etc..


Asanas: Tadasana, Padhastanasana, Viparitkarani, Sharvangasana, Halasana, Shashankasana, Paschimotanasana, Purvottanasana, Parvatasana etc.

Pranayama: OM Chanting, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, Bhramari, Anulom, Vilom and Nadi Sodhan Pranayama.

Cleaning procedure for eyes:

(a)       Sprinkling water: This process is very useful for everyone to keep eyes healthy. Close your eyes and Sprinkle water for 20-25 times thrice daily. Rub your palms to make them warm and gently massage your eyes.

(b)       Jal Neti and Sutra Neti: Nasal cleaning process is very useful for improving eyes health. Practice jal neti and sutra neti daily. Sutra Neti can be done daily after Jal Neti.

(d)       Trataka: It can be done daily anytime that suits you. Gaze at the candle flam place at eye level in 5 feet distance without blinking your eyes till you have tears in your eyes. Close your eyes and witness the effects for 2-5 minutes. Rub your palm and gently massage your eyes and slowly open your eyes with blinking.

Eye Exercise:

•           Neck exercises: Head up & down, turn your head right & left and neck rotation (clockwise & anticlockwise).

•           Eye exercises: Eye balls movement to right, left, up, down; rotation (clockwise anti-clockwise), random movement and blinking. After eyes exercises rub your palm to make them warm and cover your eyes with palm, feel the warmness, gently massage your eyes and open your eyes with blinking.
