Yoga and Naturopathy for Menopausal Syndrome

Menopause marks the end of a woman’s fertility. A woman is born with a finite number of eggs, which are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries also make the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which control menstruation and ovulation. Menopause happens when the ovaries no longer release an egg every month and menstruation stops. Menopause is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. The age at which a woman starts having menstrual periods is not related to the age of menopause onset. Symptoms of menopause can include abnormal pain, vaginal bleeding, hot flashes, vaginal and urinary symptoms, night sweats, hot flashes, mood fluctuations and cognitive changes. A reduction in estrogen levels can lead to the symptoms of menopause.


Menopause is natural process to happen when a women is at around 40-50 years of age. A healthy and fit woman does not have any problem during menopause but unhealthy, weak and stressed women normally have frightening changes viz.  Palpitation, sweating, sleep disorder, irritation, depression, headache, sound in ear, body pain etc to upset her. During this time family member especially husband should be cooperative to tackle the symptoms. If symptoms are excessive, go for a yogic detoxification program viz. shatkarma and breathing exercise. Daily morning walk, jogging, swimming, horse ridding, cycling etc. Daily yoga practice can postpone menopause.     

Yogic Kriya: Shatkarma viz. Neti, Kunjal, Shankha Prakshalana, Enema, Tratak etc.

Asana: Surya Namaskar, Paschimotasana, Chakrasana, Dhanurasana, Ustrasana, Shashankasana, Sarvangasana, Halasana, Matsyasana and Savasana etc.

Pranayama: Deep breathing, Om Chanting, Kapalbhati, Anulom Vilom, Nadi Sodhan, Bahiya, Bhramari etc.

Mudra: Yoni Mudra, Dhyana Mudra, Gyana Mudra, Prana Mudra etc.

Meditation: Practice it regularly.

Diet Therapy:

Increase vitamin C, D, E and Calcium rich food intake i.e. fruits, vegetables, sprouted, milk, coconut water, dry fruits etc. Take fruit juices (viz. beet root juice) frequently in small quantity. Take sesame milk or soya milk. Boil a spoonful of carrot seeds in a glass of milk properly and consume it daily.


Apply mud pack on abdomen and take enema to prevent constipation. Take triphala power with not water before going to bed.
