Yoga and Naturopathy for Asthma

Asthma is a condition in which a person’s airways
become inflamed, narrow and swell and produce extra
mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe. Asthma is a
common long-term inflammatory disease of the lungs.
It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms,
reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.
Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing,
chest tightness and shortness of breath. These episodes
may occur a few times a day or a few times per week.
Depending on the person, they may become worse at
night or with exercise.

TREATMENT
Yogic Kriya: Chest opening exercises are very useful.
Practice Shatkarma viz. Jal Neti, Kunjal, Vastra Dhauti
and Baghi, Uddiyan Bandh (Abdominal Lock) and
Mahamudra etc. under the supervision of yoga expert.
Asanas: Gomukhasana, Chakrasana, Simhasana,
Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Matsyasana, Salabhasana,
Makarasana, Tad asana, Kati Chakrasana, Bajrasana,
Yoga Mudrasana, Ushtrasana, Simhasana, Ekpada
Uttanasana, Sarvangasana, Ardha Matsyasana,
Paschimotanasana and finally Shavasana (corpse).
Surya Namaskar followed by Udar Shakti vikasak
kriyas.
Pranayama: Practice Bhastrika (bellows fire
Pranayama) to help strengthen the lungs and reduce
mucus congestion. Practice Kapalbhati pranayama
(lungs and brain wash by breathing) to detoxify the
lungs especially removing the dead cells, dust particles
and other toxins. Practice AnulomVilom (alternative
nostril breathing) pranayama to rejuvenate the system
and Nadi Sodhana (alternative nostril Pranayama with
retention) for vitalization of lungs tissues. Change the
breathe (Swar) to bring alertness in the system.
• For asthma triggered by cold air practice Ujjaiy
Pranayama (hissing sound Pranayama).
• For allergic asthma use Sitkari or Shitali
Pranayama.

Bandha and Mudra: Vayu Mudra, Pran Mudra,
Viparit karani Tri-Bandha etc are suggested to practice
regularly.
Meditation and Relaxation: Practice meditation daily
after breathing exercise. Dynamic relaxation and
meditation gives great relief in asthma. It can be done
everyday before going to bed as well.
Diet Therapy: Yogic treatment of asthma plays
emphasizes on diet. Wrong eating habit is also one of
the main causes of asthma, so improvement in diet is
must.
• Have one day fast on lemon juice and honey
water.
• Eat healthy, nourishing and well balanced diet.
• Eat easily digestible food.
• Instead of milk or milk products take soya milk
or sesame milk.
• Take juice of basil leaves and ginger with honey.
• The stomach should never be overloaded with
food as it presses on the chest with the feeling of
fullness and discomfort. Dinner should be light
and be taken at least two hours before bedtime.
• Drink a cup of hot water before going to sleep
at night.
• Avoid: Milk and milk products, rice, curd, spicy
food, fried food, cold drinks, banana sour fruits,

pickles, chutneys, ice cream, refrigerated food
items, ice and iced drinks. Replace Tea, coffee
with warm water or green tea.
Naturopathy: Take steam of water boiled with Ajwain
(Carom Seed). Take abdominal mud pack and enema.
Take Chest pack and steam bath. Boil mustard oil with
ajwain (Carom seed) and massage the spinal cord
especially behind the chest. Natural methods of steam
inhalation; gargling after meals; hot water pack on
the face, neck and chest; etc. are very beneficial to an
asthmatic patient. Fast walking and running are also
recommended in asthma as this helps ventilation of
the lungs. This should not again be done to the point
of exhaustion. Avoid sudden exposure to cold weather.
